Resume ATS score explained

ATS score checker: what your resume score means

An ATS score is a practical signal about how clearly a resume can be extracted, searched, and reviewed. It is not a universal employer grade. This guide explains how to check your resume ATS score, what the result can reveal, and which fixes are worth making first.

What is an ATS score?

Applicant tracking systems differ between employers. There is no single public formula that decides whether a resume “passes,” and a high score cannot guarantee a ranking or interview. A useful checker instead identifies conditions that commonly make a resume harder to parse or assess: missing contact details, unclear headings, inconsistent dates, unsupported skills, and bullets that describe duties without evidence.

Real Resume Builder calls its result an ATS Readiness Score because it is a transparent, browser-based heuristic. It gives you a prioritized to-do list rather than pretending to reproduce an employer's private system.

How to check the ATS score of a resume

  1. Upload the actual PDF you plan to submit. A source document and its export can have different text order, spacing, or missing text layers.
  2. Read the recovered text, not only the number. Confirm that your name, contact details, headings, roles, dates, and bullets appear in the expected order.
  3. Fix high-impact findings first. Repair missing identity fields, parser-risky structure, and unsupported or misspelled skills before polishing low-priority wording.
  4. Run the check again after exporting. Keep the final checked PDF and follow the employer's requested file type.

If you are looking for an ATS score checker free of signup and file uploads, you can check a resume PDF in your browser. Your file is processed locally by the tool.

What the 26 checks look for

The checker groups its heuristics so you can connect a score change to a concrete edit. The weights are not an employer's formula; they are a transparent guide for deciding what to review.

AreaWeightExamples
Contact and identity15%Name, email, phone, location, and usable links.
ATS structure and formatting20%Text recovery, headings, reading order, and date consistency.
Keywords and skills25%Relevant skills, acronym clarity, and evidence in context.
Impact and experience25%Action verbs, measurable outcomes, and useful bullet length.
Content and readability15%Clarity, first-person phrasing, placeholders, and generic buzzwords.

How the overall score is calculated

Each applicable category produces a score from 0 to 100. The overall result is the weighted average of those category scores, rounded to the nearest whole number:

(Contact × 0.15) + (Structure × 0.20) + (Keywords × 0.25) + (Impact × 0.25) + (Readability × 0.15)

If a category cannot be evaluated, the calculation uses the applicable category weights rather than treating the unavailable category as zero. Finding point values describe possible impact inside a category; they are not individually subtracted from 100. Job Match is a separate comparison and does not change this resume-only score.

How to improve a low resume ATS score

Fix the problem shown

If the report says “Full Name Missing,” put your name in normal selectable text near the top. If it says “Inconsistent Date Formats,” use one format for every role, project, and degree.

Add evidence, not a keyword pile

A skill such as SQL is more useful when a bullet explains what you queried, built, measured, or improved. Add only skills you can support honestly.

Use conventional structure

Keep contact information, Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Projects, and Certifications as recognizable text headings. A single-column layout is the safest default when the employer gives no format guidance.

Check the final PDF

Select and copy text from the exported file, inspect the reading order, and confirm that page breaks did not hide a heading or bullet.

Score first, explanation second

A number is useful only when it points to an action. Start with the findings that could hide or mislabel important information, then improve keyword context and achievement evidence. Once the report is clean, use the full ATS resume guide for deeper formatting and tailoring advice.

For a new document, the free resume builder keeps the fields structured, stores your draft in local browser storage, and exports a selectable PDF you can check before sending.

Method version and review policy

This explanation reflects the scoring behavior reviewed on 20 September 2026. Changes to category weights, calculations, or finding behavior require a substantive documentation update and a regression-test run. Cosmetic report changes do not change the method.

See the public template and PDF test report for the current export checks, and read the editorial and corrections policy for how claims are reviewed.
