8 resume summary examples and a writing formula

A useful summary helps a reader understand your level, relevant specialty, scope, and strongest evidence. Use these examples as patterns, then replace every detail with information from your own work.

The examples below are illustrative writing exercises. Replace every metric, employer, tool, and credential with information you can verify.

What Is a Resume Summary?

A resume summary is a 2-4 sentence paragraph at the top of your resume that highlights your most relevant skills, experience, and achievements. Unlike an objective statement (which focuses on what you want), a summary focuses on what you offer the employer. It should be tailored to each job application and include keywords from the job description.

A Simple Resume Summary Formula

[Role and experience] + [specialty or domain] + [relevant scope] + [one or two verified outcomes].

A summary is optional. Skip it when it only repeats your title or uses generic adjectives without adding context.

Tips for Writing a Great Summary

  • Keep it concise: 2-4 focused sentences give a reader useful context without delaying the experience section.
  • Use accurate job language: Mirror relevant terminology only when it truthfully describes your experience.
  • Lead with your strongest asset: Years of experience, notable employers, or a standout achievement.
  • Quantify impact: Use numbers to demonstrate your value: revenue, users, efficiency gains.
  • Tailor every time: Customize your summary for each application. Generic summaries are easily spotted.
  • Avoid cliches: Phrases like "hardworking team player" add no value. Use specific, measurable claims.
